Top 5 Vitamins for Healthy Gums & Teeth

13th December 2022

Everyone knows that brushing and flossing your teeth, as well as regular dental check-ups, are essential for good oral hygiene! However, what some of us tend to forget, is that our diet can also have a big impact on the health of both our teeth and gums. By minimizing our intake of sugar and making sure we eat a balanced and healthy diet is essential for healthy teeth. The following vitamins can be used to help improve your overall oral health.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C can be found in strawberries, capsicum and broccoli and helps keeps the connective tissue in our gums healthy and strong. Without it, there is nothing holding our teeth in place! If you suffer from low Vitamin C, you may notice bleeding gums.

Calcium

Calcium is one of the most important nutrients for strong teeth as it strengthens the enamel of our teeth (the protective layer which helps to protect our teeth against cavities). Calcium can be found in milk yoghurt, salmon and green vegetables. While dairy foods are our best source of calcium, however if you are lactose intolerant or vegan, you can find sources of calcium through broccoli, kale, bok choy and nuts.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D can help with oral health issues such as tooth decay and gum disease, and can be found in red meat, egg yolks, and oily fish. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that 1 in 4 Australian adults are Vitamin D deficient. With Vitamin D being essential for healthy teeth and bones, these deficiencies can lead to oral-health issues.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus, the second most abundant mineral, is a building block for healthy teeth, bones and calcium levels. Phosphorus can be found in chicken, red meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, nuts and beans.

Vitamin A

A Vitamin A deficiency is associated with impaired tooth formation, enamel hypoplasia (a developmental defect that results in inadequate enamel) and gum disease. Vitamin A can be found in oily fish, sweet potatoes, carrots, capsicum and pumpkin. Loading up on these vegetables keeps your mouth nice and healthy!

Now that you know which vitamins are good for your oral health, do you need to take vitamin supplements?

If you are already eating a healthy balanced diet, then chances are, you are already getting enough of all of the essential vitamins and minerals. It is important to note, that before you start taking any supplements, to speak with your Dentist or GP first!
