Why updating your Medical History is Important!

14th February 2023

It is very important to tell your dentist about your medical history. It is also important that this is updated regularly so that the dentist is up to date with the latest information.

This includes information on:

  • All current and previous medications
  • Details of your emergency contact and medical practitioners involved in your care
  • Recent testing of your conditions, for example: if you have high blood pressure or diabetes, when they were last checked, and what the readings were
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Any vitamins, minerals, supplements, or medications bought without a doctor’s prescription
  • If you have any dental anxiety
  • Any allergies and intolerances
  • If you have a family history of cancer
  • Any medical conditions
  • If you smoke, vape, take illicit drugs, or drink alcohol
  • Recent hospitalizations
  • Any surgeries within the last 2 years

As a general rule, we will give you a medical history form. This form will be explained to you by your dentist. It may be helpful to bring a copy of your medical history from your doctor. There are many reasons why it's important for your dentist to keep your medical history up to date. Some medicines can cause side effects in your mouth. There are also medical conditions that can affect the mouth. Oral health can also affect some medical conditions.

Certain medications can cause dry mouth and increase the risk of tooth decay and infections. Some medications and supplements can also increase bleeding or increase the risk of mouth problems. Advising your Dentist about your medications can decrease the risk of developing problems.

Habits such as smoking, illicit drug use, and alcohol consumption can affect oral healing. This includes during and after dental treatment. These habits may also increase the risk of oral cancer.

In the event of an unforeseen medical emergency, your dentist needs to have your medical history and emergency contact information accurate and up to date.
